Derrick Alexander has enough ideas for children’s stories and character to last him well into the next Millennium. In previous years Derrick worked mainly in manual and labouring roles in Burton on Trent but towards the end of the 1997 his creative energies were ignited in the direction of children’s story-writing. The reason for his sudden writing urge he attributes solely to the birth of his now daughter. Sophie. It was Sophie who gave him the idea for his original children’s story and all his subsequent tales. Derrick said; ”I got the idea from Sophie and the pictures from my mind. The great love I have for Sophie keep me working hard.”
Beards and Books is an educational programme which focuses on providing tuition, delivering mentoring workshops, publishing online educational content, hosting storytime events and curating subscription boxes for children and young people.
As a company, we offer a variety of services such as:
1. Tuition: We offer core subject tuition ranging from SATS to GCSE preparation. The sessions are held either in pairs, groups, or one-on-one where highly-trained tutors track, diagnose, and evaluate students progress to maximise student potential.
2. Mentoring: We pair young people with older peers who act as positive role models to support their learning and development.
3. Storytelling: We conduct workshops for infants and children based on different themes where multicultural tales, fables, and storytellers are used to diversify the experience.
4. Online educational content: We provide downloadable content such as workshops, Powerpoints, and printables, that is in-line with the school’s curriculum and are designed to best support a student’s learning.
5. Subscription boxes: We provide tailored book subscription boxes available for purchase by parents and teachers which are packed with culturally inclusive books and treats from around the world.
Author of ‘In The Know: Inspiring Black Figures’
This book aims to inform readers of the valuable contribution many black inventors and figures have had on our society and our world as we know it. The inspiring people in this book may not be widely known in mainstream media, however they have changed the world in more ways than one, breaking down racial barriers and giving us inventions that assist us in our daily lives. Positive black representation is inspirational to children of colour whose history is often ignored in educational learning. It aims to share the accomplishments of different black figures to enlighten and encourage. It is easy to read with children and presents lesser known black history in a digestible way with a mixture of newer and older figures highlighted. Latimer, Morgan and Boykin are amongst the 25 amazing figures written about. It also encourages children to think of what career they may have in the future.
Brainchild Publications aims to assist children with the raw materials they need to be successful in life.
These raw materials are creativity, self-belief and co-operation. We feel these three elements are essential in allowing young children to “think out of the box” and grow up inspired to change the world for the better.

The series Ama’s Stories was inspired by true stories and experiences of Ama.
Cynthia Deluola the Author of the books is Ama’s mother. She aims to have the stories open the imaginations of young readers.
Throughout the series, the bright-eyed young girl shares her love for everything from Swimming, Dancing, Cooking, Holidays, Family time to learning about her culture.
Through a series of colorful animations done by the talented visual artist Fleance Forkuo the stories are brought to life in the most remarkable way possible.
The books also serve as a teaching tool about the importance of representation and diversity, with several images depicting young Ama wearing traditional African outfits, explaining different foods and traditions as well as her experiences as a young black African girl in London. The books shows Ama confidently celebrate the fact that she can be anything she chooses, while also encouraging things like healthy eating and academic excellence.
